Where did July go?? Our last Wilderness camp group left this morning for Allegany. We hope they have great weather and make wonderful memories! Camp Invention campers had an egg drop challenge this morning. Campers worked together to devise the best and safest carriers for their eggs. We did have one group whose egg did not break when it hit the sidewalk! This afternoon campers went off to the Buffalo Foundry to enjoy time in their makerspace. From Scratch chefs made fruit popsicles this morning. This afternoon they made homemade strawberry and blueberry jam. When they needed something to eat their jam with, campers decided to make homemade bread. In music Discovery campers learned more about the orchestra and learned more songs about animal sounds. In science today they used magnets to discover if there really is iron in the breakfast cereal that they eat. Discovery 6 campers went to Tift Nature Preserve for a tour and to explore the trails. Court Sports campers spent time at the pool this morning and played flickerball and kickball.
Happy Monday everyone! Discovery campers went off to the pool this morning. We are so happy with the progress that our campers have made in the water this summer. In science today campers made rainbow rain. From Scratch, chefs went right into the kitchen this morning and made a corn and bean salsa. They made their own tortilla chips to eat it with! This afternoon they went to pick blueberries. We can't wait to see what creations they make with their crop. Wilderness campers learned how to whittle today. They are so excited to leave for Allegany in the morning. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather. Camp Invention began their day with a free standing straw tower competition. They worked this afternoon on the creative process by brainstorming ways to fix a specific problem. They also accepted the challenge put forth by court sport campers to a game of Stones. Court sport campers also worked on their basketball skills today. Karla Vandenberg, local actress, opera singer, and educator spoke to our OnStage! campers today about using theater to establish real life connections and understanding. She spoke about the many reasons to be able to work creatively throughout your life, and campers got up on their feet to play the game, "Walk a Mile in My Shoes". It was a great day!
We cannot believe that today is the end of Week 5. This morning Discovery 3 & 4 went to the Aquarium. They saw the sea lion show, some penguins, and found Nemo! Discovery campers grew crystals in Science. Discovery 7 campers had a talent show this afternoon and made jellyfish with salt and food coloring. Discovery 6 worked on their Under the Sea arts and crafts. Farm to Table baked their lasagnas and
OnStage! worked on choreography today and had a Master Class with Ben Porcari of Empire Visual Effects. Mr. Porcari gave a presentation on digital media and the arts, including animation and digital effects. He also showed clips of some of his work in the digital effects industry. Water Sports went fishing. Wilderness campers spent the day in Sardinia hiking and swimming before their overnight campout at EFS tonight. Trash'n Fash'n put on a fabulous fashion show for staff and families today. Have a great weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone Monday morning for our last week of 2018 Summer Camp.
The sun is out again, and the fun continues. Discovery 5 campers went to the Aquarium this afternoon. They had a great time seeing the sea lions and all of the unique fish. Water Sports campers took the kayaks out this afternoon for a great day on the water. Before that they played water polo in the pool this morning. Farm to Table campers made lemon bars, and this afternoon began to make squash lasagna. Discovery 3 & 4 used their hands to make ink prints of fish. In Science Discovery campers made rainbow cupcakes. Wilderness spent the day cooking over the campfire, making hot chocolate and soup in the kelly kettles and bannock pizzas, cinnamon rolls, cheese sticks, and campers' creations.
The morning rain and possible thunderstorms forced us to move a couple outdoor field trips today. We have rescheduled the Water Sports kayaking trip to Thursday afternoon, and moved their fishing trip to Friday afternoon. Discovery 7 campers were disappointed that they were unable to go on the pedal boats at Canalside today, but they had a fantastic time bowling at Classic Lanes! Discovery 3 & 4 and Discovery 6 worked in the camp kitchen today making graham cracker oceans. Discovery 3 & 4 finished their paper plate aquariums. Discovery 5 learned about static electricity in science. They played Just Dance and ended their day with yoga. Discovery 6 finished their fish puppets and made fortune tellers. Wilderness did some team and partner building activities. Trash'n Fash'n finished their outfits and brainstormed ideas for their fashion show. They spent the afternoon redesigning t-shirts. Farm to Table made nectarine caprese salads and zucchini and berry muffins. OnStage! practiced monologues, had dance and music class, and continued to work on costumes and sets. Water Sports had a parachute waterballon toss, 3 legged race with sprinklers, and they played water bomb tag. Not even the rainstorms can ruin the fun at Elmwood franklin Summer Camp!
The fun continues here at EFS Summer Camp. Trash'n Fash'n campers continued work on their garments. Some even began to make dresses. They made pillows from their Goodwill clothing and they learned how to use a sewing machine. Farm to Table campers made homemade lemonade popsicles. They made cucumber and blueberry salad with feta cheese. and veggie roll-ups. Discovery campers made shakers in music, and in gym campers played with the parachute. Discovery 5 made jellyfish and played Find the Hidden Treasure. Discovery 6 went to Canalside and rode the water bikes. In science they did an experiemnt called "Egg in a Bottle". Water Sports campers played Drip, Drip, Drop (the water version of Duck, Duck, Goose). They had water relay races, water ballon batting practice, and played capture the flag. Wilderness campers went off fishing this afternoon. OnStage! campers were all pleased and excited to receive their roles for Mary Poppins, Jr. We are anticipating rain for tomorrow, so some of our outdoor field trips may need to be changed. Happy Week 5! Today began with OnStage! auditions for Mary Poppins, Jr. Farm to Table campers went off to Agle Farm Market for a tour and to pick up some supplies for the week. Trash'n Fash'n also went shopping for supplies, but they went to the Goodwill store. Wilderness campers began a new session today. They learned how to make a fire, a very important skill before they are off to Allegany next week. Campers took part in the burning rope competition. Discovery campers began their days at the pool. Discovery 7 did dancing and yoga this morning. In sports they played Island. Discovery 5 and 6 made fish puppets. In Science today Discovery campers explored fire. Water Sports campers had a water balloon toss, played gaga and fun in the sprinklers.
What a week! Our Wilderness campers have returned from the Adirondacks. They had a fabulous time and have so many memories. We are so thankful for the four adults who went with this group of young campers. Our OnStage! performance of Music Man, Jr. was amazing. This group of performers awed their audience and there were only a few empty seats in the theater. Master Chef made cannoli today. Better Buffalo finished their week of community service. Today they delivered cat toys that they made to the Buffalo Animal Shelter and had a visit from the organization Because Char Smiled. They were taught how to make special flowers for patients at CHOB who cannot have live flowers in their room. This group of campers loved helping others all week, and we couldn't be prouder of their compassion and smiles. We are excited to see everyone on Monday morning for the beginning of Week 5. Discovery campers are continuing to explore their 5 senses this week. Discovery 3 & 4 campers made wind chimes this morning. Discovery 6 went to the Botanical Gardens for the same great program that Discovery 7 campers enjoyed yesterday. Discovery 7 did a cool paint craft which they needed to use their sense of touch. Master Chef campers discovered that their ice cream that they made yesterday had frozen perfectly and made milkshakes. this afternoon they made hand pies, making the crust from scratch! Young Authors invented new characters based on their background/ entrance music. This afternoon they went to the Western New York Book Center for a workshop on book making. Better Buffalo campers helped out in the community garden at Grassroots Farmers' Garden. This afternoon they spent time packing up and organizing the many donations they have received from their fellow campers for their used clothing and toy drive. Field Sports had a morning discovery activity, went swimming, played Capture the Flag and kickball. Our Wilderness campers are continuing to have beautiful weather and a great time in the Adirondacks. Today they hiked Mt. Jo. OnStage! had their first full dress rehearsal for tomorrow's performance of Music Man, Jr. The show begins at 2:30 and all are welcome! We are all looking forward to a fantastic Friday!
Today was a great day for a baseball game!! Field Sports and Better Buffalo campers went to this afternoon's Bisons game. Better Buffalo delivered 150 cupcakes to the Genesis Center to be used this evening community meal. Field Sports played SPUD and flag football before leaving for the game. Master Chef tried their hands at making ice cream this morning. Campers made strawberry, vanilla, cherry, and lemon ice cream that they will use in milkshakes this afternoon. Discovery campers made their own pizza this morning and ate their creations for snack. Discovery 7 campers went to the Botanical Gardens today for a workshop to build understanding of the nutritional value of the plants we eat as they chopped vegetables, squeezed oranges, grated lemon peel and ground wheat berries to make flour. Campers also experienced a mini tour of the Gardens. Young Authors wrote original poetry today, even using a dead bird they found on the playground for inspiration. We have heard from our campers in the Adirondacks and they are having a blast. Today they hiked Giant Mountain and the pictures they are sending us are amazing!
